By collecting data and measuring tourist traffic in Southwestern Serbia, analyzing existing accommodation capacities, as well as studying the work of local tourist organizations and agencies, the state of tourism in this part of the Republic of Serbia can be seen in the best way, as well as its growth trend.The municipalities of Southwestern Serbia have preserved natural values, rich ethno heritage, cultural monuments and other anthropogenic tourist resources. With the development of tourism, not only would the emigration of the population be stopped, but there is a possibility that there would be return migrations, and thus an economic recovery of this part of the Republic of Serbia. A comparative analysis of population decline in the past and today in the paper determines how tourism solves the problem of depopulation, ie how it appears as a catalyst for population growth. The paper is aimed at researching those activities in tourism that can contribute to the balance and stability of the entire economy, because it is the areas where other economic activities are not developed, which is the case with Southwest Serbia, that have a chance to improve the economy.In addition to the above, the doctoral thesis deals with defining the role of tourism in the sustainable development of Southwestern Serbia. Also, PESTEL and SWOT analysis will determine the current position of the tourism industry and the possibilities of its future development in Southwestern Serbia. Also, defining the goals and future directions of tourism development in Southwest Serbia, are the starting point for developing a tourism development strategy for this part of the Republic of Serbia.
