o:3064 Taksonomija kompleksa sempervivum ciliosum i s. ruthenicum (crassulaceae) na Balkanskom poluostrvu Taxonomy of the sempervivum ciliosum and S. ruthenicum (crassulaceae) complexes on the balcan peninsula : doctoral dissertation sr The yellow-flowered Sempervivum taxa from the Balkan Peninsula,tentatively classified into the Sempervivum ciliosum (S. ciliosum, S.galicicum, S. jakucsii, S. klepa, S. octopodes) and S. ruthenicum (S.kindingeri, S. leucanthum, S. ruthenicum, S. zeleborii) complexes,exhibit notable phenotypic plasticity. Additionally, the frequentoccurrence of spontaneous hybridization, coupled with the limitednumber of studies addressing their variability, has resulted ininconsistent classification schemes and ambiguous taxonomicrelationships. This study aimed to analyze the extent of the inter- andintraspecific variability of a wide range of morphological, anatomical,carpological, and palynological traits to enable the morphologicaldelimitation of complexes, distinguish similar taxa, and differentiatehybridogenic from parental taxa, ultimately facilitating a taxonomicreevaluation. Univariate and multivariate statistical analyses revealed amoderate to high degree of variability in the examined characteristics,with a discernible clinal variation pattern observed within populationsof the hybridogenic taxa S. ciliosum x marmoreum, S. jakucsii xmarmoreum, and S. kindingeri x macedonicum. The same analysessupported the justification for the recognition of the distinct complexes,as well as different patterns of differentiation between closely relatedtaxa, including hybridogenic and parental populations. The resultssubstantiate the taxonomic distinction of S. ciliosum, S. galicicum, S.jakucsii, S. klepa, S. kindingeri, S. leucanthum, and S. zeleborii at ahigher taxonomic rank. However, the taxonomic status of S. octopodesremains unresolved. Furthermore, evidence suggests that populationspreviously ascribed to S. ruthenicum are likely of hybridogenic origin,arising from interspecific hybridization between the aforementionedspecies and S. marmoreum. Given the endemic nature and restricteddistribution of all taxa studied, the findings underscore the necessity ofincorporating these species into active conservation projects.
