Their relations werefirst put to a real test when the Serbian army occupied the Albaniancoast. At that moment, Italy, acting in its own interests, alongsideAustria–Hungary, supported the creation of an autonomous Albania atthe London Conference. During the Great War, particularly after thesigning of the Treaty of London on April 26, 1915, the irreversibledeterioration of relations between Italy and Serbia began, culminatingin outright hostility by the end of the global conflict. The central issuebetween Rome and Belgrade during this period was the struggle overthe Habsburg legacy – that is, conflicting visions for the future of theBalkans and the Danube region after the war. The inability of Pašićand Sonnino to reach an agreement during the war meant thatunresolved issues became the root of conflicts between Italy andYugoslavia in the interwar period.
